20ᴛʜ Nᴏᴠᴇᴍʙᴇʀ, 2019

It has been thiry-seven years since Blade Runner‘s release. Over the years, the movie has garnered quite the reputation amongst lovers of movies and science fiction alike. And it is a reputation which is throughly deserved. Blade Runner is one of the best movies ever made, and it’s a movie which I will never review. Everything which can be said about the movie has been said already, after all. To those of you who haven’t read the book which the movie is based on: please read it. It’s more than worth your time.

That said, there is a detail which not many are aware of. The events of Blade Runner‘s “final night” take place today: the 20th of November, 2019.

That’s correct. Following tonight (Los Angeles time), Blade Runner will be a story which takes place in the “past“. We have no flying cars. We have no replicants. I do not yet own an electric ostrich. We do — however — have unmissable ads, and a dystopian society (hidden under fluff as it might be).

There’s much to be said about the optimism of the past, and the optimism we continue to exhibit about the future. I have no doubt that Blade Runner 2049 will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps in these veins, but 2049 uses Blade Runner as a starting point, so it’s not a fair comparison. Blade Runner was a projection of our future, and 2049 is projection of that future.

We have yet to visit Orion. We have yet to find out what C-beams are. We have yet to name something the Tannhäuser Gate. There are many memories the rain has yet to touch.

What we do have, however, is Blade Runner. Happy Blade Runner Day, everyone.

Even though I will never review Blade Runner, I will leave you with the following as recommended reading:

ᴄᴏᴍɪɴɢ ᴜᴘ ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ Cᴏʀᴠɪᴅ Rᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ

“Spotwoman” and I have slowly been working on our multi-stage review of Death Stranding. My own review has turned out to be much more exhaustive than I had at first imagined. If all goes according to plan, it should be appearing on the blog within the next 48 hours.

Here’s the official poster for Blade Runner:
